Forward

This Blog was born from a wet day in Germany, looking at one of the many war memorials in that country and further investigation which led me to notice a lack of reference material with regards to the German Army in World War One.

My work on this project has been made easier by the World Wide Web, but with the information tools at my disposal it has been a constant battle to ensure that the correct information has been included.

This Blog is intended for reference, and will hopefully enable those with an interest in the German Army of World War One to look up with confidence the various units and organisations which contributed to the German war machine.

The Division started the war by taking part in the advance through Belgium and the battle of the Marne, as part of the 9th Army.  It then took up positions on the Aisne.

The Division remained in the line on the Aisne until October 1915, and from October 1915 until June 1916 it was in the Champagne sector.  The 86th Fusiliers suffered heavily in the Aisne battles.

From July to September 1916 the Division was in action on the Somme where the 86th Fusiliers were destroyed.  It was then sent to Artois.

It reentered the line on the Somme in December 1916, where it remained until March 1917 when it returned to Artois.  Between August to October 1917 it was on the Flanders front.

In October 1917 the Division was transferred to the Russian Front at Vilna, before returning to France in November 1917 and seeing action in the Alsace sector.

In February 1918 the Division entered the line at Cambrai, before moving to St Quentin where the Division was almost destroyed.  It suffered severe losses in the Somme battle at the end of March.

It moved to Tournai where it was rebuilt before reentering the line at Soissons in August, and was defending the Oise.  Despite suffering heavy losses, the Division was still in the line at the wars end.
