This Blog was born from a wet day in Germany, looking at one of the many war memorials in that country and further investigation which led me to notice a lack of reference material with regards to the German Army in World War One.

My work on this project has been made easier by the World Wide Web, but with the information tools at my disposal it has been a constant battle to ensure that the correct information has been included.

This Blog is intended for reference, and will hopefully enable those with an interest in the German Army of World War One to look up with confidence the various units and organisations which contributed to the German war machine.

2nd Army


The 2nd Army was formed from  the II Army Inspectorate on mobalisation.

It fought on the Western front and was decimated at the Somme.  At the startof the war in fought at Mons and Namur.  It fought at the battle of St Quinten, the Marne and the Aisne before the start of trench warfare.

In early 1917 the Army fell back to the Hindenburg line.

In March 1918 the Army took part in the "Michael Offensive" part of the Kaisers Battle, and was the centre army of three attacking armies on the Cambrai front.

After the Battle of Amiens the 2nd Army was forced to retreat with heavy losses.


The 2nd Army was comanded by:

General (later Field Marshall) Karl von Bulow until April 1915 when he was retired after a heart attack.  He was replaced by General Fritz von Below who had previously comanded XXI Corps, who was replaced Max von Gallwitz on 19th July 1916.  On 17th December 1916 he was replaced by General Georg von der Marwitz.  On 22nd September 1918 he was replaced by General Adolf von Carlowitz.

The army ended the war on the Western Front
