This Blog was born from a wet day in Germany, looking at one of the many war memorials in that country and further investigation which led me to notice a lack of reference material with regards to the German Army in World War One.

My work on this project has been made easier by the World Wide Web, but with the information tools at my disposal it has been a constant battle to ensure that the correct information has been included.

This Blog is intended for reference, and will hopefully enable those with an interest in the German Army of World War One to look up with confidence the various units and organisations which contributed to the German war machine.

1st Cavalry Division


This Army Cavalry unit was formed in August 1914.

The 1st Cavalry Division was formed in 1914 and formed part of the 8th Army.

3rd Cuirassiers (Count Wrangel)  (East Prussian) Cavalry Regiment

Formed in 1717 as the Dragoon Regiment of Wuthenow, named after Friedrich Count Von Wrangel a Prussian Field Marshall.

1st Dragoons (Prince Albrecht of Prussia) Cavalry Regiment

Formed in 1717 as the Dragoon Regiment of Wuthenow, named after Field Marshall Prince Albrecht of Prussia.

2nd Cavalry Brigade

12th Uhlans Regiment

Formed in 1860 as the 4th Combined Lancer Regiment

9th Horse Jaeger Regiment

Formed in 1913 as the 9th Horse Jaeger Regiment

41st Cavalry Brigade

5th Cuirassiers (Duke Friedrich Eugene of Wurttenburg) (West Prussian) Cavalry Regiment

Formed in 1717 as the Dragoon Regiment of Wuthenow.

4th Uhlans (Von Schmidt) Regiment

Formed in 1815 as the 4th Uhlans, and named after General Karl Von Schmidt who joined the regiment in 1834.
