The cavalry was the 22nd Dragoon Regiment, Artillery was provided by the 29th Field Artillery Brigade, comprising the 30th and 76th Field Artillery Regiments. It also included the 1st Company of the 14th Pioneer Battalion.
It started the war at the battle of Mulhouse, and entered France on 20th August 1914 and took part in the fighting in Lorraine. By October it was in the Artois area.
It stayed in the Artois area until May 1915, it suffered heavy casualties and was moved to the Champagne area in June. It remained in that sector until the end of September 1916 when it was transferred to the Somme.
In April 1917 it was moved to the Champagne area of the front and from there it moved to Verdun in July, suffering heavy casualties in the French attacks there.
In April 1918 it took part in the battle of the Lys in May, and again lost heavily. In August it was on the Aisne, where it remained until the end of the war.
